Radio Merit Badge

I'm a counselor for Radio Merit Badge in the Northern Star Council of Minnesota and Wisconsin. I will be counseling Radio Merit Badge on March 5, 2015, in Shoreview, MN, at the Northwest District Merit Badge Day. For more information, check the Northwest District web page. This event usually becomes available to scouts in other districts, so if you are in a different district (or council), keep checking back for details.

For scouts who want to go on and earn their FCC amateur radio license, I will be offering a three-week follow-up class. The dates for the follow-up class will be arranged with any interested scouts, so if you are interested, check with me at the merit badge session. In addition to letting you get on the air, this also gives Scouts the privilege to wear the BSA Amateur Radio Operator Rating Strip on their uniform. After that class, you'll be ready to take your FCC test, and we will give details on how to take it. The flyer below was for an earlier session of the licensing class. Please contact me for details on when it will be scheduled next.
Your merit badge counselor is shown here, making contacts around the country in -6 degree temperatures with emergency battery power. For more details, see 2007 FYBO results.

AMATEUR RADIO LICENSE CLASSES

If you enjoyed earning Radio Merit Badge, then you will want to continue and get your license!  To earn your Technician Class license, you will need to pass a 35 question multiple-choice FCC test covering electrical and radio theory, operating practices, and FCC rules.  There are two classes coming up that will cover all of the material to pass the test.  After the class, there will be an opportunity to take the test.  The test itself will cost $15.  By getting your license, you also earn the BSA Amateur Radio Operator Rating Strip for your uniform.

Date:               Saturday, November 8, 15, and 22, 2014

Time:              12:30 - 2:30 PM

Location:        North Star Scouting Museum
2640 E. Seventh Avenue
North St. Paul, MN 55109
Museum phone number for directions: 651-748-2880

Cost:               FREE!

This will be an intensive three-week class to get you through the material to pass the test.  You won’t be an expert when you’re done, but you will have a good basic understanding of radio (especially after today’s merit badge session).  And more importantly, you will be able to pass the test and get on the air!

The book for this class will be a study guide that I wrote.  You can get a FREE e-book copy by using the coupon code below.  If you’re unable to download the book, I can e-mail you a free PDF or Kindle copy.  If you prefer an actual book, I have a few copies available for $5.  It’s also available on Amazon or at Radio City in Mounds View.  The regular price is $3.99 for the Kindle version, or about $12 for the paperback.

Before the first class, please read Chapters 1 and 2.  You don’t need to read all of the questions and answers—we’ll go over those in class.  If you want to read more, great, but you don’t have to finish the book.  And don’t worry if there are parts you don’t understand.  We’ll also go over those in class.  After these three classes, you’ll be ready to take the test, and we’ll make sure you know when and where you can take it.

This class is open to all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts (and Scouters).  It is suitable for Webelos on up, although most Cub Scouts and Brownies should be able to pass the test.  For Cub Scouts and Brownies, parents should contact me first and we can decide whether your child will be able to understand the material.  Parents are also welcome to take this class and get their license!  To register for this FREE class, please sign the sign-up sheet today, or have your parent or guardian e-mail me at:  clem.law@usa.net

There will also be a 10-week class in St. Louis Park on Tuesday nights, starting in January.  In addition to earning your FCC license, you will earn Electricity and Electronics Merit Badges (and Radio Merit Badge, for those who haven’t already earned it).    The cost of that class is only $10.  Full details can be found at:  http://www.mnyarc.org/events/classes

For more information about the November class or to register, please contact Richard Clem, WØIS, at 651-489-0238 or by e-mail at clem.law@usa.net
